Overview
eye-light® is Espansione Group’s flagship light-based medical device for ophthalmic care. It brings two proprietary technologies, LM™ LLLT photobiomodulation and OPE™ IPL intense pulsed light, into one platform, to deliver non-invasive treatments for ocular surface conditions such as dry eye disease linked to meibomian gland dysfunction. It is intended for eye care professionals who want to offer in-practice dry eye management. Espansione is an EssilorLuxottica group company, and Essilor South Africa supplies and supports eye-light® locally.
Two technologies in one platform
- LM™ LLLT (photobiomodulation): Espansione’s patented low-level light therapy uses red, blue and yellow light. A mask covers the periorbital area and the light stimulates cellular ATP production, generating gentle endogenous heat. Espansione lists ocular surface management, inflammation control and cellular metabolism support among its uses.
- OPE™ IPL (Optimal Power Energy): a software-controlled intense pulsed light whose calibrated thermal pulses target the lower eyelid. It is designed to be used without protective gel and only for selected anterior segment conditions.
Modular, guided treatments
The latest eye-light® uses a modular, software-driven architecture built for ophthalmic workflows. It offers up to nine treatment protocols for anterior and posterior segment care, and new protocols can be added without replacing the device. Real-time system checks confirm the correct configuration, smart alerts help prevent improper use and on-screen guidance supports accurate treatment set-up. The hardware has a 7-inch touchscreen, a fast processor and a stable Linux-based operating system designed for daily clinical use.
Supported by research
Espansione states that LM™ LLLT is recognised by the TFOS DEWS III report as a management tool for dry eye disease and ocular surface disease. Literature cited by Espansione also describes its use before and after cataract and refractive surgery to help stabilise the tear film. For the posterior segment, Espansione is studying photobiomodulation for dry age-related macular degeneration (AREDS 2 to 3) in the multicentre LightWave I and II research programmes. Indications and protocols should follow the instructions for use and the practitioner’s clinical judgement.

meibomask®
Professional photobiomodulation mask for upper and lower eyelid treatment

What is the difference between LM™ LLLT and OPE™ IPL?
LM™ LLLT is low-level light therapy delivered through a mask that covers the eye area. OPE™ IPL is intense pulsed light applied to the lower eyelid. eye-light® offers both in one device.
Is eye-light® the same as eyelight® MDR?
Yes. eye-light® is the official product name. ‘MDR’ referred to the European Medical Device Regulation and is not part of the name.
Which patients are suitable for treatment?
The practitioner assesses each patient and follows the contraindications in the instructions for use. Screening with me-check® can help choose the treatment.
Is it a treatment for macular degeneration?
Photobiomodulation for dry AMD is being studied by Espansione in clinical research. Speak to Essilor South Africa about the approved indications.
